George Lapin

Author

George Lapin is a beginning writer with a focus on Christian Historical Fiction. His first book titled The Missing Captive is set in early colonial America in a tumultuous period decades prior to the French and Indian War. The story explores the struggles, faith and resilience of the individuals in this time period. With a passion for history and Christian values, George’s writing offers a unique perspective on the lives of early Americans and the spiritual challenges they faced.

George retired as a construction executive and discovered that he had a desire to write fiction. He possesses a vivid imagination and believes that he can use that gift to write an intricate plot.

George realized that most of the historical fiction novels he read centered on the French and Indian War or later. It seemed that there was such a rich history in early colonial America that was being overlooked, so George decided to write about that time period with all of its political and religious conflicts. The changes in North America during this era could help produce an interesting story.

Mixed in with the action above, there were those who had a strong desire to spread the gospel and braved the danger to accomplish that goal. Both the French and English missionaries of that time risked their lives for that cause. George desired to write their story along with the American and Canadian natives whose lives were being upended because of the struggle between the European powers in North America.

The Missing Captive is that story.

The writing of The Missing Captive
There has been very little interest in historical events in colonial America before the French and Indian war. There was not much teaching about this time period in school except perhaps in local areas where the events took place. So this story was written to describe life and conflict in the colonies as it takes place in the colonial period beginning in the early 1700’s.

It is 1705 and the colonies are in the middle of a war. The conflict between England and France in Europe has turned into Queen Annes war in the colonies as both countries are fighting for control of the North American Continent. Political and religious conflicts only acerbate the issues between the factions. Indian tribes join the French or English depending on who they think will win and help maintain their way of life.

Research during this timeframe was difficult as a lot of events went unwritten. This is a work of fiction and the only actual events are the Raid on Deerfield Massachusetts in 1704 and the relocation of captives to Montreal or the Indian Village of Kahnawake.

Summary of the Missing Captive
In 1704 a war was raging in North America between the English and French colonies. Raids on each other’s settlements was not uncommon and in February 1704 the French Militia and their Indian allies raided the village of Deerfield Massachusetts capturing over 100 people and taking them back to Canada. Among the captives was Rebecca Bates.

The story opens a year later when Gideon Bates, her brother, is chosen to travel from New York to enemy territory in Canada to rescue her. The siblings belong to a missionary family with an abusive father and both are seeking freedom from their family circumstances. Gideon wants to be in the militia and trains as a ranger. He is a tough fighter but a complex character. Rebecca wants to be a missionary.

The journey is an impossible mission filled with danger and unending action.

Gideon finds Rebecca, but instead of her being pleased to be rescued, she is concerned for Gideon and his direction in life.
